The Discovery of…

I'd seen a photograph by Ger van Elk : The Discovery of the Sardines and thought- oh a highway with sardines coming out of a crack in the road- it left me craving for more - wrapped myself in aluminium foil, became a sardine and built a large metal sardine can from which I emerged, excited to perform this act on various stages & finally in at De Appel in Amsterdam - 1976 .

The performance at De Appel was meant to be short - to keep our audience in anticipation. A big crowd had gathered inside - many people waited outside. during this moment Ed van der Elsken was eager to record it on his film - he often beautifully photographed women, however I had not consented to this and started my performance. For a brief moment I felt victorious - relished retaliating.
